The new area

While it would be ideal to always have an area franchise first, this may not always be the case, and we will make special arrangements to support from the centre, new areas, particularly where no area franchise is yet in place.

The size of an area is not pre defined as such, we envisage it being about the size of a reasonable sized town or country area that can be conveniently serviced.  There is always the temptation to try to take on too large an area to start, and then later find that only a part of the area is properly serviced. Our solution to this is not to go looking to set up areas very near to each other to start, but to get areas running some way apart and later to fill in the gaps. Obviously with a large city or highly populated area, it may make more sense to set up a number of areas as soon as we can, and this should present no problem to any of them, and may allow more inter-team co-operation and allow far faster progress to be achieved.

Ripe territory for development

The allocation of area franchises is done on a first come basis, but if the area that you would most like, has already gone, there could be another within easy travelling distance that may be suitable for you. Before defining new areas we will look at what is happening in the existing surrounding ones. We may also discuss the splitting of an existing area with an area franchisee where we can see that the area is proving too large for them.

Local team franchises are issued on a first come basis up until three are attached to an area franchise, or where the number has fallen below 3. After this we will put proposals to add additional local franchises to the area, where all members of the local team (area and local team franchises) get a vote, and where the vote is tied the second full time person of the area franchise has the casting vote.

Mini franchises are likewise based on a first come basis in allocation. The limiting factor here is the willingness of other team members to support them, so other team members have to already be in place. Any team member can have up to 3 mini franchises attached to them, but we expect it to be more like an average of one. To go beyond 3, we need to be confident that they are able to support them and monitor what is happening, and that the area is not becoming over crowded.

The objective is to have as little interference from the centre as possible, giving as much independence and decision making as can be delegated to the area teams, supported by the Regional Franchises and brand co-ordinators. You will see that there is no mention of managers, or of an hieratical system.
